Apple iPod touch

Apple releases an updated iPod touch

The iPod touch has had quite a life. It was first introduced in September of 2007, at the September Music event. The iPod touch has remained largely unchanged, from an exterior point of view, since 2012 with the release of the 5th Generation iPod touch. The last update for the iPod touch was in July of 2015, but today that changes.

Today Apple released the 7th generation iPod touch. There are only a couple minor updates to the device. The biggest of these is the processor, which goes from an A8 to an A10 Fusion.

The A10 Fusion is the same processor that is in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The A10X variant is in the second generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, as well as the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. The A10 is a pretty powerful processor and will make using an iPod touch that much better.

The second change is the amount of storage available for purchase. The iPod touch has been available in 32GB and 128GB models. However, the new iPod touch is also available in a 256GB. The added storage will be great for those who need that amount of storage.

The remaining items, like the screen, its resolution, the headphone jack, Touch ID, the camera, connectivity, and colors all remain the same.

The three sizes for the 7th generation iPod touch will cost you $199 for the 32GB model, $299 for the 128GB model, and the new 256GB model is $399. The new iPod touch is available to order today and will be available later in the week at Apple Stores.

New iPods

Today Apple released new iPod Touches, iPod Nanos, and iPod Shuffles.

iPod Touch

iPod Touch 2015 Full

The last updates for the iPod Touch was back in September of 2012. There was a slight update that added a 16GB model, but there were no major component upgrades with that release. The iPod Touches also received a slew of color updates. These colors were Black, Gray, Pink, Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue.

The Six Generation iPod Touch has a few new specifications. It now sports an A8 processor, this is the same as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It also sports an 8MP iSight camera. The 8MP camera is similar to the 8MP iSight Camera that is in the iPhone 6. There are a couple of minor changes, the iPod Touch only has a f/2.4 aperture, which is slightly less than the f/2.2 that is iPhone 6, but it does allow for timer control. The iPod Touch also allows for Slo-mo video capture at 120 frames per seconds as well as 1080p HD video recording at 30 frames per second.

Along with the updated processor and camera comes the M8 co-processor. This is the same co-processor in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The M8 is used to track motion of the iPod Touch, including elevation and motion.

There are two other upgrades to the hardware. These include 802.11AC Wifi which is upwards of six times faster than the 802.11N that was in the 5th Generation iPod Touch. The 6th Generation iPod touch also includes Bluetooth 4.1.

There is one item removed from this version of the iPod Touch. The loop feature, which was introduced in the last generation, is now gone.

There are a selection of new colors for the iPod Touch. The colors are Space Grey, Silver, Gold, Pink, Blue, and (Product)Red. The iPod Touch comes in a selection of sizes, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB, with the 128GB model being a model that you can only purchase through Apple. The prices are $199, $249, $299, and $399 respectively. You can order these today.

iPod Nano

iPod Nano 2015

Much like the iPod Touch, the iPod Nano last received an update in September of 2012. At that time, the 7th Generation iPod Nano received a new form factor that harkened back to the 2nd Generation iPod Nano. The iPod Nano made 16GB the only option for storage. The Nano also sported an aluminum body with a 2.5″ screen. The nano also made use of multi-touch to provide controls to the user. Just like the iPod Touch, the iPod Nano also received an updated set of colors, the same colors, Black, Gray, Pink, Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue.

The new iPod Nanos are very similar to the previous model. The only noticeable change is colors. The colors are Space Grey, Silver, Gold, Pink, Blue, and (Product)Red. The remaining specifications are unchanged. The iPod Nano still sports the same 2.5″ Multi-touch display, has a standard size of 16GB and is $149. You can order an iPod Nano today.

iPod Shuffle

iPod Shuffle 2015

As with the iPod Touch and iPod Nano, the iPod shuffle was last updated in September of 2012 with the 4th Generation. The 4th Generation iPod Shuffle changed the form factor from what looked like a pack of gum to a square with a clip. The shuffle also came in the same selection of new colors as the other iPod models; Black, Gray, Pink, Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue.

Similar to the iPod Nano, the iPod Shuffle has only received a minor update. The update is the colors. They are the same colors as the iPod Touch and iPod Nano. The colors are Space Grey, Silver, Gold, Pink, Blue, and (Product)Red. The price has remained unchanged at $49. The new iPod Shuffle is available now.

Final Thoughts

Even though the upgrades to the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle were merely color upgrades, the upgrades to the iPod Touch are significant and will allow any new iPod Touch owners to use future iOS versions with many of the features that current iPhone users are utilizing. If you are in the market for a new iPod, now is the time to buy them.
