Initial Thoughts on the 3rd Generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro

    image

When Apple held their “There’s More in the Making” event on October 30th, it was widely anticipated that they would release new iPad Pros, and they were not disappointed. The thing that most did not expect is that they would be available for ordering on the same day.

Many people ordered new iPad Pros, myself included. I ordered a 256GB 12.9-inch iPad Pro Wifi + Cellular model. Along with the iPad Pro, I also ordered the new Apple Pencil. Both items were delivered on November 7th, as expected. I also ordered the Smart Folio case, which arrived before the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. I thought I would provide my initial thoughts on the new items.

    Form Factor

The screen size of the larger iPad Pro screen has not changed, however the bezels have changed. The bezels have been reduced and they are now the same size all the way around the front of the device. This reduction means that the physical size is smaller, which makes it much easier to hold, as compared to the 2nd Generation iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro is now a uniform depth all the way around. This is contrary to all other iPads, which have had tapered edges, but it is not the first time that this form factor has been used on Apple Products. It is quite reminiscent of the iPhone 4/4s/5/5s, which all had the same look, but with bigger bezels.

Even though the iPad Pro has larger bezels than iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max, the new iPad Pro does have a common feature with the iPhone, Face ID. The bezels on the iPad Pro house the Face ID camera, which means there is no notch on the iPad Pro, unlike the iPhoneX, XS, and XS Max.

    Face ID

One of the biggest changes, besides the bezels is the inclusion of Face ID. Unlike on the iPhone, Face ID works in any orientation. With the bezels being the same size around the device, you may not immediately know where the Face ID camera is. Luckily, if you hand is covering the camera, the iPad Pro will let you know that it is covered, so you can move your hand. This is a nice touch.

    Apple Pencil

The 2nd Generation Apple Pencil, or as I call it, the No. 2 Apple Pencil, is a solid update. The Pencil now magnetically attaches, using the flat side of the Apple Pencil, to the iPad Pro. Specifically, it is the the “East Side” of the iPad Pro when the Face ID camera is at the top.

With the Pencil being magnetically connected, it automatically charges and is automatically paired whenever it is connected. The Apple Pencil still requires Bluetooth to be enabled in order to operate.

    Smart Folio Case

Beginning with the iPad 2 Apple created a cover that would protect just the iPad’s screen. They called this the “Smart Cover”. What made is “Smart” was that it could detect when it was covering the iPad and when it was opened through the use of magnets. This has been the case (no pun intended), until now. The 3rd Generation iPad Pro reverts back to the original iPad with a case that covers the front and back, but still includes the “smarts” from the Smart Cover. the new name is the "Smart Folio". It is nice to have full protection of the entire iPad, particularly since there is now a very prominent camera bump on the back.

    Closing Thoughts

I have owned an iPad since 2010. I have owned the following iPads:

    • Original iPad
    • iPad 2
    • iPad 3
    • iPad Air 2
    • 1st Generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro
    • 2nd Generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro

My usage of the iPad has not been as much as I would have expected. It has mostly been games, application development, and taking notes during meetings at work. While these activities will still continue, I am hoping to expand beyond that.

With the 3rd Generation iPad Pro, I am going to attempt to increase my usage. I am going to try and use the iPad Pro for more than I have in the past. In particular, for many of the things that I may have previously grabbed my laptop.

Part of the idea behind this is that I have an early 2015 MacBook Pro. While it still works well, it is inevitable that it will stop working at some point and I want to see if I can replace most of the functions of the MacBook Pro with the iPad Pro.

Yes, there are some things that the iPad Pro cannot do, like app development, but I still have an iMac that I can use for that. I am not sure how this is going to go, but I am going to try and give it a shot. I am not going to put a time limit on it.

I will do a more comprehensive review of the 3rd Generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro after I have had a lot more time with it.

Additional Tidbits for Apple's October 2018 Event

    image

Since Apple's "There's More in the Making" event additional details have come out about some of Apple's products. Alongside the new information there were some details I did not include within my post about the event, but that were announce during the keynote. Let us start with Apple and Recycling.

    Recycling

It should be no surprise that Apple is focused on creating environmental-friendly products. During the keynote Apple provided some information about the MacBook Air and the 2018 Mac mini. The information provided is that the cases for these two products are now made from recycled Aluminum. Apple indicated that the recycled aluminum is from the shavings made during the manufacturing of the iPad. What this means is that by recycling aluminum, it does not have to be mined.

Apple is able to do this because their metallurgy team is able to create an alloy from these shavings that is just as tough and still meets the visual standards that users have come to expect from Apple.

Alongside this, the plastic within the Mac mini is highly recycled. Again, this means new plastics do not need to be created just to build the products. And with the expectation that there will be a large number of new Mac minis ordered, this is good news for the environment.

    iPad Pro Memory

The 2018 iPad Pros all have at least 4GB of memory, with the exception of the 1TB models. The 1TB models have 6GB of memory. From what can be derived, the extra memory in the 1TB models are needed for the T2 chip to be able to manage the 1TB of storage.

    iPad Pro and Apps

The new rounded Liquid Retina display on the 2018 iPad Pros means that developers will need to update their apps. Specifically, developers will need to link their apps against iOS 12.1. If you have been using iOS for any length of time, you have likely noticed that not all applications get updated immediately. In most cases this is not a problem, however the new rounded corners means that apps that have not been updated will be presented with black bars around the app. This technique is similar to how any screen change has been handled in the past.

There is something in particular to note about the 2018 iPad Pros and Split Screen. If you are using two apps that have been updated to support iOS 12.1, it will look normal. However, if you are using one app that as been updated and another that has not, both apps will be shown with black bars above and below the applications. While this may be annoying, particularly for those applications that may take a bit longer to update.

    Microphone Security

All portable Macs with the T2 Chip, which include the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air there is a new security feature with the microphone. When you portable Mac is asleep the T2 chip will cut off the microphone. This is not just a software switch, but instead it is a physical hardware switch. The same is not done for the FaceTime camera, because when your Mac is closed the view is obscured enough so that nothing is visible. Here is a quote from the "T2 Security Chip Overview", quote

"All Mac portables with the Apple T2 Security Chip feature a hardware disconnect that ensures that the microphone is disabled whenever the lid
is closed. This disconnect is implemented in hardware alone, and therefore prevents any software, even with root or kernel privileges in macOS, and even the software on the T2 chip, from engaging the microphone when the lid is closed."

This is a great security measure and no matter what your microphone will not be useable by anyone while the lid is closed.

    iOS 12.1

iOS 12.1 was also released last week. The update includes a slew of new features, most notably Group FaceTime. With Group FaceTime you can chat with up to 32 people simultaneously. Video capabilities are limited to the iPhone 6s and later, and the iPad Air 2 and newer. Even though FaceTime Video is only available on these devices, audio-only Group FaceTime is available on all devices that support iOS 12.

Along with Group FaceTime, is something that users are more likely to use, Emoji. iOS 12.1 has 70 new Emoji. Some of the new Emoji include a bagel, additional hair colors, and additional faces.

    Apple Pencil

With the 2018 iPad Pros, a new Apple Pencil was released. Many new products do not work with older products, and the No. 2 Pencil does not work with the older 12.9-inch iPad Pros. However, it is common that older products work with thew newer products. This is not the case with the first Apple Pencil and the 2018 iPad Pros. The 2018 iPad Pros will only work the No. 2 Apple Pencil. This will add some additional cost to those buying a new iPad Pro, if they want to use the Apple Pencil.

    Closing Thoughts

Those are the additional items that have been discovered. It is likely that even more will be discovered as time goes on. I have ordered a new iPad Pro, and once I have had enough time with it, I will provide my review of it.

Apple Event Round up: iPad Pros

    image

Today Apple announced held their October event, "There’s More in the Making". This was held in Brooklyn, New York. Apple announced a bunch of new products. Let us look at the new iPads Pros.

The 1st generation iPad Pro was introduced in 2015 and it was what many users were looking for in a larger screen iPad. It was 12.9-inch, something that many users were looking for. At their WWDC 2017 keynote, they unveiled the all new 10.5-inch iPad and the 2nd Generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The 2nd generation iPad Pros reduced the physical depth and included the A10X processor. Today, Apple unveiled the next generation of iPad Pros.

The new iPad Pros have some big enhancements. Let us start with the big one, Face ID.

    Face ID

Face ID was introduced last year with the iPhone X. It has changed the way that iPhones will be manufactured going forward. Now, its s on the iPad Pros as well. The new iPad Pros now have Face ID which is the same sensor that is on the iPhon Xs and iPhone Xr.

There is one difference from the iPhones, Face ID can work in any orientation. That can be landscape or portrait. The fact that Face ID is now available on the iPads will help those, like myself, be able to use the same gestures across all of my iOS devices. But Face ID is not the only new feature, there have been some changes around the size of the iPad.

    Size and Screen

With Face ID, and removal of the home button, the bezels of the iPad Pro can be reduced. With reduced bezels you can do one of two things, either increase the size of the screen or reduce the physical size of the device. This year, Apple did both.

The new iPad Pro come in two sizes, 11-inches and the same 12.9-inches that we have seen before. The 11-inch screen is the replacement from the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. With the 11-inch iPad Pro Apple decided to increase the size of the screen. With the 12.9-inch iPad Pro Apple decided to maintain the same screen size, but reduce the physical size of the device. This reduction in physical size is what many users had been hoping for. They love the screen size but can find the size a bit unwieldy at times.

Just as with the iPhone Xr, the new iPad Pros have rounded corners. These rounded corners will allow for edge-to-edge display of applications. This will allow you to watch videos even larger than before.

The new iPad Pros still have an LCD screen. Apple has dubbed the screen Liquid Retina, just like the iPhone Xr. The screen still has many of the features that users have come to expect. tHis includes a Wide Color gamut (Display P3), ProMotion, and True-Tone. The resolution of the 11-inch screen is 2388 pixels by 1668 pixels, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro has the same 2732 by 2048 resolution. Next let us look at the processor changes.

    Processors

The 10.5-inch and 2nd Generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro had an A10X processor. This provided some great processing and gaming performance. The new iPad Pros have an A12X Bionic. The A12X Bionic has an 8 Core 64-Bit CPU as well as a 7-core Apple-Designed Graphics Processor. Embedded with the CPU and GPU is the M12 motion coprocessor.

There is one additional processor which has never been in an iPad before, a Neural Engine. The Neural Engine is used for machine learning and it is the same Neural Engine that is present in the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xr.

    Connectivity

Since the release of the 4th Generation iPad, which was released in November of 2012, the iPad has used the Lightning connector. This reversible plug was the replacement for the old 30-pin Dock connector. The 2018 iPad Pros have changed connections again. The 2018 iPad Pros now use USB-C for the connection. This is not the same as Thunderbolt 3, even though it is the same connector.

The USB-C connection will allow the iPad Pro to output to a display, up to 5K resolution. This will be nice if you want, or need, to output your iPad Pro to a larger display.

The iPad Pros also continue to have 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.0. With USB-C the iPad Pro includes an 18-watt power adapter and has a 1 meter USB-C cable. There are still cellular options available as before and they still incorporate the Dual-sim technology that was present on the previous iPad Pros with one physical SIM and one eSim.

    Storage

Apple has positioned the iPad Pro as a computer. In order to have an iPad Pro be considered a new computer it needs to have a lot of storage. To help position the iPads as such, the 2017 iPad Pros had the option of having 512GB of storage. This allows for more items to be stored locally including larger files. The 2018 iPad Pros take this a bit further, with offering a 1TB model. Both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch are customizable up to 1TB. The exact size options available are 64GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.

    Accessories

With a new iPad it is very likely that you will get new accessories. The 2018 iPad Pros are no exception. Besides having to purchase new accessories with the connector change, there are a few new products. Let us start off with one that is designed specifically with the iPad Pro in mind; the Apple Pencil.

    Apple Pencil

The original Apple Pencil was introduced alongside the 1st generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. When it was introduced it was a brand new product for Apple. It was rounded and worked exclusively with the iPad Pro. While users enjoyed the Apple Pencil, it did have some drawbacks. Most notably, it was round. While this is great for holding, it does not work well for placing on a table.

Another downside to the Apple Pencil was that it required charging via the lightning port on the iPad Pro. This was very convenient for charging, but the cap that covered the lightning port could easily be lost.

The last criticism for the Apple Pencil is the fact that there was no where to store it on the iPad. You would either have to add a pencil loop or find a case that would hold the Apple Pencil.

Apple has addressed these concerns with the new Apple Pencil, which I am going to dub the No. 2 Pencil. The new Pencil has addressed all of these concerns at once. The new pencil is no longer round. Instead, it has a flat side. This flat side will allow you to place the pencil on a surface and not have it roll away. Simultaneously, this flat side is the side that you can use to attach the pencil to the iPad Pro. When you connect the No. 2 Pencil, it will begin charging and it charges via magnets, much like the Apple Watch.

This means that your Apple Pencil will likely never be out of power when you need it and it will likely always be connected to your iPad Pro. This also means that there is no longer cap to lose, nor an additional adapter to bring just to charge the Apple Pencil.

When you attach the No. 2 Pencil, you will see an image, similar to the one below. It will provide you with the options to switch functions.

There is one last new feature to the Apple Pencil. It now detects double-tapping. This means that you can easily switch between tools within a drawing app. Developers will be able to customize the actions that you can choose as well.

The No. 2 Apple Pencil looks to be a great refinement to the existing Apple Pencil. It will only work on the 2018 iPad Pros and costs $129, which is $30 more than the original Apple Pencil.

    Smart Keyboard

Each iPad Pro model has had an associated Smart Keyboard to go along with it. The benefits of the Smart Keyboard are that you do not need to charge them nor do you need to provide batteries for the keyboard. Instead, it draws power through the Smart Connector on the iPad.

A Smart Keyboard is available for the new iPad Pros and is slightly improved. You now have two angles to choose from with the Smart Keyboard. One that is good for desktop use and another for lap usage. The Smart Keyboard has gone up $40 to $199.

    Smart Folio

The last new accessory is one that protects the iPad Pro. That is the Smart Folio. The Smart Folio is similar to the Smart Cover that has been available for the iPad for a while. The Smart Folio protects both the front and back of the iPad and will provide the same functions, by sleeping the iPad Pro when the cover is closed as well as waking it when the Smart Cover is opened. The Smart Folio is available in Charcoal Gray or White and will cost you $99.00, which is twice as much as the Smart Cover's price.

    AppleCare+

AppleCare+ is still available for the iPad Pros. It still provides the same coverage as before, with two accidental damage coverage. The price for AppleCare+ has gone up $30 to $129. Alternatively, you can pay $5.99 monthly for the coverage.

    Closing Thoughts

The new iPad Pros look to be a great upgrade from previous versions. The price for the 11-inch starts at $799 for the 64GB model up to $1699 for the 1TB model with Cellular. If you opt for the 12.9-inch model that starts at $999 and goes up to $1899 for the 1TB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Both iPad Pros are available in Silver and Space Gray, just as the last generation.

The Apple Pencil, Smart Keyboard, and Smart Folio are all available to order for shipping today.

If you are in the market for a new iPad, you should definitely look at the new 11-inch or 12.9-inch iPad Pro. They are available to order today and will be available on November 7th. The 2018 iPad Pros look to be solid updates, but that is just first glance.

    Apple Event Roundup: Macs

    image

Today Apple announced held their October event, "There’s More in the Making". This was held in Brooklyn, New York. Apple announced a bunch of new products. Let us look at each of them, starting with the Macs.

    MacBook Air

Back in 2010 Apple unveiled a brand new product, a very thin, very light, and all-flash laptop. They named it the MacBook Air. Since its introduction it has been the same general shape. Today Apple unveiled a brand new MacBook Air. The new MacBook Air sports an 8th Generation Dual-Core Intel i5 processor that runs at 1.6GHz. with Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz.

The MacBook Air comes with two Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports. These are both along the left side of the machine. The biggest change to the MacBook Air is the brand new Retina display, which is the first time there has been a Retina display on the MacBook Air. The display is edge to edge and has a

The MacBook Air also comes with 8GB of memory standard and 128GB of flash storage. The memory can be configured up to 16GB and the flash can be upgraded to 256GB, 512GB, or 1.5TB.

The new MacBook Air starts at $1199, which is $200 more than the older MacBook Air, which is still on sale. The new MacBook Air comes in three colors, Silver, Space Gray, and Gold. You can order the new MacBook Air today, and it will ship next week. Let us now turn to another new Mac, one that has been a long time coming.

    Mac mini

The Mac mini was introduced back in early 2005. At its initial release, and with subsequent updates it was positioned as an entry-level Mac that would be great for new Mac users to bring your existing keyboard, display, and mouse and replace your old device. The Mac mini has not been updated since October of 2014, so four years old. Today, that has changed with a brand new update.

The new Mac mini has all re-designed internals. This start with the all new flash-only storage options. These options are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB.

To go along with the flash options, there are some additional memory options as well. 8GB is standard, but you can configure 16GB, 32GB, or even 64GB of memory.

The Mac mini comes in two models, the entry level, which sports a 3.6GHz quad-core 8th Generation Core i3 processor, and the higher-end model has a 3.0GHz six-core 8th Generation Core i5 Processor. Yes, you read that correctly, a six core processor. You can configure either model with a 3.2GHz six-core Intel Core i7 processor if you want.

There is one last configurable option. The Mac mini comes with a standard Gigabit ethernet port, but you can configure a 10-gigabit ethernet network adapter that is capable of running at 1Gbps, 2.5Gbps, or 5Gbps. This option does cost $100 more, but if you need it, you can configure it.

The last new feature of the Mac mini is the case. Since its initial release the Mac mini has been Silver in color. The new Mac mini no longer come in silver, it comes in Space Gray, and it only comes in Space Gray. The new color looks really good and will be welcome by man.

The new Mac mini comes with a slew of ports. In fact it has four Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, 1 HDMI 2.0 port, one ethernet port, one 3.5mm headphone jack, and two USB 3, traditional USB A ports. It also comes with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.

The new Mac mini starts at $799. You can order it today and it will ship next week.

The new MacBook Air and Mac mini are great updates to machines that have been a long time coming and will be welcome to users who are looking to upgrade their existing machines.
