Apple Card Introduces 'Advanced Fraud Protection'
Modern life provides a number of fantastic conveniences. As just one example, you do not have pay with cash everywhere you go. Instead, you are able to use a debit or credit card. Using a credit card can make some tasks, like budget tracking, much much simpler because everything is in all one place. This is particularly true given that many people tend to purchase items from a large variety of places.
When you purchase something online you need to enter in your information. A majority of the time you do not need to worry about someone getting your credit card information. However, from time to time there is a data breach and credit cards can become compromised.
In the United States you are not liable for any fraudulent charges on your credit card. This provides some peace of mind, but it does not hurt to have additional protection. The Apple Card does this in a distinct way.
The Apple Card is a slightly different type of card. It is a credit card, but when you are approved for an Apple Card you actually get two numbers. A digital number stored in the Wallet app on your iPhone and a second different number that is encoded on your physical Apple Card. If either of the numbers is compromised, you are able to use the other one.
In order to add even more protection, there is a new option with iOS 15 called "Advanced Fraud Protection".
What is Advanced Fraud Detection
Advanced Fraud Protection is a new feature that will periodically change the Card Verification Value, or CVV, and often called a security code. The security code is a three digit number that add its own protection to help prove that you are in fact the card owner and have the card with you, or at least access to it. In order to use Advanced Fraud Protection, you will need to enable it.
Enabling Advanced Fraud Protection
Enabling Advanced Fraud Protection is a pretty straightforward process. To enabled Advanced Fraud Protection follow these steps:
- Open the Wallet app.
- Tap on the "Card" icon at the top of the screen to bring up the card info screen.
- Locate the "Advanced Fraud Protection" toggle.
- Tap on the toggle next to "Advanced Fraud Protection" to enable it.
Once Advanced Fraud Protection is enabled there will be a clock icon next to the CVV code. The CVV cod will refresh based upon a couple of criteria. One is after you have viewed the code or when the security code has been verified. A second is where it will refresh periodically.
Notes
You may think that a changing security code would be a problem. However, it should not be. With Advance Fraud Protection enabled, your subscriptions and renewals should continue to work without any interruption. The reason is that the security code is not needed on an ongoing basis, but it is only needed when the card is initially validated.
Closing Thoughts
The addition of the new rotating security code with "Advanced Fraud Protection" is a great addition and should help reduce the instances of someone getting a hold of your card and security code and being able to use it your card. The biggest downside would be for someone who has memorized their security code, because they will need to look it up each time. But this trade off for security and convenience may be well worth it.
