I watched the latest episode of House and there was a quote I thought was rather profound “Actions have consequences…being a man is accepting them”. There are only a few things that I can say I regret in my life. Some I can change some I cannot.

There’s another quote from the Brad Paisley song “Letter to Me”, that hits rather close to home. “…Go Hug Aunt Rita every chance you get”. This hits home because it’ll soon be 3 years since my Aunt died. There had been some tension between her and my mom that stemmed from an incident on the Fourth of July a few years back now. One of my cousins threw water on me, which I warned she shouldn’t do, and I stormed off. From what I’ve been told my Aunt and my Mom started bickering over it. After that they hardly spoke. They did begin to talk a bit about a year before my Aunt died, but it was never the same as prior to the incident.

In September of 2007, my Grandma called my Mom to say that my Grandpa had collapsed, I drove my Mom and a couple of family members to my Grandparents house and then I drove my Aunt and my Mom to the hospital. It was not long after that when they told us that he had died. I bring this up because I never spent enough time with him. My family and I along with my Grandparents lived in the same house from about 1986 to 1989. It was cramped with 9 people in the house but it was fun none-the-less.

After the incident on the Fourth of July my grandma started saying that us grandkids were ungrateful and complaining about the fact that none of them ever came over. I was one of the only ones who actually did go over on a somewhat regular basis. When I was overall there I would listen to my grandpa rail about how the Chinese were going to take over the world and the like. I always listened, why, because it’s just who I am. I always listen. I may not agree, but I always listen.

The last regret which is not family related is a situation that I had with a friend of mine who was one of the only true friends I had in high school and the only one who I really kept up with afterwards. The incident stemmed from a slip of the tongue I made that he kept harping on. I had said that my fiance’s (girlfriend at the time) favorite time was the Holocaust. It was not the fact that he made fun of me for a few days, but that he would not let up on it. It came to the point where I told him to never talk to me again. I regret this statement now. It’s been a couple of years since I last spoke to him. I have tried reaching out to him to apologize and I have done so. But I fear it’s too late and that I forever lost his friendship.

I am not sure what brought all of this on, but it’s something I thought I would share. I cannot undo everything that I have done, but I can attempt to undo some of the things that I have done. Most everything in my life I do not regret as it has made me who I am today. There are a few things I would have done differently but I am not sure if those matter in the grander scheme of things.

The last quote that has made an impact on me is in the Song “New Orleans” by Toby Keith. The lyric is as follows “There’s a few defining moments in Every Persons’ Life, Where You Know What You’ve Done Wrong, And You Know What You’ve Done Right.”

Maybe I’m just taking a bigger look at what I’ve done right and wrong over the past 28 1/2 years I am not sure. Who knows what will happen in the next 28 1/2 years of my life. I hope I do not have as many regrets during the next 28 1/2 years as I do now. Maybe I can fix a few of the ones I have now so that they will not be regrets. Only time will tell.

I generally do not put my thoughts on politics on my blog, but today’s shooting and assassinations, yes they fucking assassinations, bother me. Why you may ask. Well, we’ll get into that in a minute. First a bit of a background, as it stands now.

Arizona 8th District Representative gabrielle Giffords was attending a meet and greet, called ‘Congress on Your Corner’, in her own district where constituents can get real face to face time with their repesentative. This, in among itself, should be required for ALL members of congress regardless of longevity. Getting actual representatives to voice their complaints and actually be able to express their wishes and feel as though they are actually making a difference.

Approximately 10 minutes into the meet and greet the suspected gunman, Jared Loughner, began opening fire on the crowd. According to reports he was using a 9mm glock pistol with a clip that could hold 30 shells. He struck Representative Giffords in the head and killed several others.

Congresswoman Giffords has several things going for her. First she is the only congressperson married to an Military person who is on active duty. Secondly, she managed to win as a Democrat within a Conservative district.

Now, I’m not sure if this has anything to do with it but it is rather suspicious. Representative Giffords is on a list of 20 individuals who voted for the Health Care bill that are in districts that were carried in 2008 by Senator John McCain. Below is the graphic of the other 19 individuals on the list.

Palin Target Map
The title is “It’s Time to Take A Stand”. This in itself is harmless. However, if you look at the graphic you will see that each person on the list is represented by a bulls-eye with a cross through it, just like on a scope.

This could just be a coincidence, however given the stance of the Republicans and Tea Party regarding the National Rifle Association it makes perfect sense. The second portion is a quote by Palin

Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: “Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD!”…

Here is an image of the Twitter Post, which has since been removed. However, due to the nature of the Internet it will live on forever.

Palin Reload

Don’t Retreat, Instead Reload. Hmm… does that mean take up arms and take vigilante justice into your own hands? Again, look at the link between The Conservatives and Tea Party and the NRA. Again, Coincidence? Possibly.

I am all for allowing somebody to express their own opinions and beliefs. I have no problem with people doing this in a peaceful, even if argumentative, manner. What one says is protected by the First Amendment. Nobody can silence what one says, at least not legally.

Despite this legal right, I do not believe as though Violence should ever be considered an ‘Answer’ for anything. Sorry, I am a pacifist. Fuck it, I’m not sorry. I am a pacifist. I believe as though diplomacy can be used for any situation. I do not believe in violence. In spite of this belief, if somebody were to attack me on my land you damn well better believe I would defend myself and stand and take any punishment. I do not actively go out and seek violence for violence sake. Nor do I go out and seek violence to make a point. To me, violence is just a mechanism of last resort that the uncontrolled resort to because they do not know what else to do to release their anger.

On the subject of opinions. Everybody is entitled to one. However, do not give me a load of bullshit and tell me it’s roses. Do not come up with your idea and finding justification to support your idea all the while ignoring FACT. Facts ALWAYS win. Belief is not enough when there are facts to support your cause.

Many people can be swayed on topics if presented with facts and evidence to back up said topic/argument. This is the way to win people over, not by forcing violence on them.

What does today’s incident mean in the long run. Well, first off a Federal Judge was killed. Whether it was intended or not, it has occurred. Initial reports pointed to Representative Giffords being killed, however these turned out to be false and she was just in critical condition undergoing surgery to remove the bullet in her head. So, there has not been an assassination of a Representative or Senator since 1968 when Robert F. Kennedy was killed.

I believe due to the association with Representative Giffords with the Palin ‘Target list’ that Palin’s chances of being included on the primary ballot or even the actual ballot for next year is drastically reduced to the point of almost Zero. Why you may wonder. Quite simple, nobody, not even the Republicans will support a candidate that could even remotely be tied to such an incident as today’s. This may ultimately be the end of the road for Palin’s Political Career in the United States, but only time can ultimately tell what will occur regarding Palin’s future. Let us all hope it does not include more reality shows, we sure don’t need those.

This incident has also shattered the political world. Many politicians are wondering if they will be safe enough to back to their home districts to attend their meet and greets. This is truly a sad day for US Politics.

The one thing that I do believe is that this incident has forever changed America. This is not on par with the Incidents of 9/11, however this is nothing less than Terrorism, and on our own home soil. This is truly a sad day for America and our requirement for taking action instead of realizing that we are all fallible and are not perfect. Our arrogant thoughts that “I don’t need help” will ultimately be our society’s downfall.

If you have any thoughts regarding today’s incident or the current state of United States Politics please leave them in the comments below.

I am quite excited about WWDC, if I had prepared enough ahead of time I could have actually gone this year, but alas I have not and I will be watching the live blogs like many others. I do have a few thoughts as to what we will see.

I’m sure that we will see the next iPhone. I’m pretty sure it will be much like the Engadget iPhone that has been shown already. It’ll be available in both Black and White. My guess is that it will also be available in 32GB and 64GB models. The iPhone 3GS 16GB will become the $99 model; and it will be the black model.

I’m not sure when the next iPhone will be available; I tend to think it’ll be around the 20th or so. This will give time for the phone to be able to get to the stores as well as allow developers to get their applications to be submitted, approved and in the store before the phone is available.

The second thing we’ll see is a new build of Xcode for something new, what, nobody is 100% sure. Some are suggesting a revamped AppleTV. Xcode could allow the other iPhone OS devices to be used as a remote (even more than it is now).

I’m almost sure that we will also see a demonstration of some new applications from many of the developers that will really show off iPhone OS 4.0, which has already been announced.

What I would like to see released is the iPad 4.0 beta software. I don’t know if this will be released, yet this would be a nice surprise for those who would like to test iPhone OS 4.0′s additional features on their iPads.

I’m not sure what else is going to be seen at WWDC this year. There are a few other rumors, including Safari 5 with more HTML 5, Free Mobile Me for everybody, iTunes Cloud/Re-launched LaLa service and who knows what else… let me know what you think we’ll see tomorrow.

WordPress 2.7

10 Dec 2008

So I just upgraded to WordPress 2.7. You can download it here.

There are a few things to note with this upgrade. You no longer have to manually update WordPress. There has been some controversy within the development community about why this upgrade isn’t called wordpress 3.0. There are major changes with the dashboard, but I like the upgrades and changes. I think it’s a much better layout.

This is the biggest update and most useful thing around. Just being able to automagically do the upgrades will really reduce the hassle for those who are less tech-saavy. This update just made it one of the most viable Content Management Systems around for anybody who wants to have their website hosted and their host has a one-click wordpress install. Version 2.7 is going to start a trend with more sites using wordpress as the backend.

There is one major thing that I don’t like is the fact that the two plugins, Delicious and Google Search widget still refuse to update, yet the other plugins updated without any issue.

As with the other updates I do, if there’s anything that’s not working properly, let me know.

These are purely my own flaws and thoughts.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what I want to do and where I want to go, long term. And I got to thinking, long term, I always seem to be thinking long term, not really short term, not really mid-term, but long term. Everything in the future, never the present. I know this is completely different than most others, and I’m not entirely sure why I take this type of view over any other, nor do I know exactly how I managed to develop this viewpoint.

The goofy thing about the whole thing is that I have also noticed that I tend to know where things are going to end up, given the evidence. Let me show you an example. Now, I usually don’t write about work much, but in this case it’s pertinent.

The City of Aurora built a fiber network to replace the one that they’ve been leasing from Comcast. Seeing as, at the time we had only a single 1.5Mbps T-1 lines between our Main Library and each of our three buildings, the city putting in fiber was going to boost that percentage up 666% to 1Gbps. This type of bandwidth is completely unimaginable without spending a ton of money a month than most non-profits would be able to afford.

As soon as I found out that we, the library, were in the city’s plan for fiber, I already knew where we were going to end up, what were we going to be able to do, and what we were going to be able to change and consolidate.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I do think about short-term items, and can easily focus on short-term tasks and even mid-term projects and the like, but I guess I’m just more of an end-goal type of person.

The biggest downside to being an end-goal person is the fact that you can easily get discouraged when things start to become a bit to daunting in the short-term, it’s difficult to pull back and look at the long-term again. Since you’re not used to the issues that come up with short-term problems.

I don’t know, I could be entirely wrong, it’s been known to happen.
